Hodai: Japanese Korean Fusion Buffet Restaurant

It’s as if I have not been to several Korean and Japanese restaurants in the weeks that passed that I find myself at this new place in Examiner Street, West Triangle, Quezon City that is offering unlimited Japanese-Korean Fusion dishes: Hodai. The English phrase “All you can” in translated to Japanese as “hodai”. This is why Sam Chung named her and her brother’s newest venture as such.

From the same people behind Sodam Korean Buffet Restaurant, Hodai is a Japanese fusion restaurant that takes on a new concept of a modern buffet styled setting. Wherein it’s like a sit-down dinner, but food is served in a limitless way, until you are full to the brim.

Since I am not from the North (and I’m not alluding to any GOT references here haha!) I wouldn’t usually go there just to look for something to fill my tummy. But since I was tagged along by friends and it was a Sunday, I went with them to Hodai. Hodai's location is in a residential place but there are already other established restaurants in Examiner Street, as it is slowly becoming like Maginhawa or Lilac. The place is an old 1950s-1970s house turned into a restaurant and can sit about 150 persons.

Their menu is fixed and they offer two sets: The Gold Set and the Silver Set. Since they have only been opened for merely a few weeks, they are offering customers slashed off prices of the original/regular set prices. The Gold Set, priced at PHP 599 per person, includes Teriyaki, Rosé Cream Pasta, Tempura, Korean Fried Chicken, Kani Salad, Tonkatsu and Spicy Cheese BBQ. While the Silver Set is everything in the Gold Set minus the Spicy Cheese BBQ and priced at PHP 499. But as of writing of this post, the regular prices are at introductory rates and as the months go on, the discount rates/prices will change.

When we were there we availed of the Gold Set which was at a discounted price of PHP 359. Here are the dishes included in this set:

Kani Salad - fresh salas including lettuce, cabbage, cucumber and kani topped with sesame dressing.

Kimchi Gyoza - deep fried gyoza with a Korean flare including kimchi, veggies and pork stuffing.

Fish Teriyaki - pan-seared cream dory infused with a citro marinade along with a side of seasoned veggies.

Rosé Cream Pasta - spicy twist on the classic cream pasta with chili seasoning and mussels on the side.

Korean Fried Chicken - classic crunchy fried chicken topped off with Korean glaze.

Roll Tower - handmade rolls including salmon, bulgogi, kani, kimchi, egg and veggies with a drizzle of variety of sauces. This sushi tower includes unique flavors namely: Fried Kani Maki, Fried Kimchi Tuna, Spicy Kani Maki, Bulgogi Maki, Egg Roll Maki with Blueberry glaze, Kani Tuna Maki, California Maki, Fried Squid Maki and Mango Maki with Kiwi glaze.

Spicy Cheese BBQ Bowl - spicy marinated pork BBQ with melted cheese.

Mixed Ebi and Vegetable Tempura - a variety of crunchy hand battered deep fried dish including shrimp, fish, sweet potatoes and greens.

Tonkatsu - extra crispy breaded, deep fried pork cutlets served with shredded cabbages and tomatoes with a special dipping sauce.

You can order once one of your dishes run out. It may take some time for your order to be brought to your able but know that all dishes are made per order straight from the kitchen. That's the only downside of a sit-down buffet. Nonetheless you could enjoy unlimited serving of their dishes freshly cooked and not just like any other buffet where the food might be sitting on the warmer for hours already. My verdict: I love it! For the price, amount of food, number of selections, taste and quality; Hodai is quite affordable and worth your money.

Hodai promises to provide an affordable all-you-can-eat twist on the current Japanese-Korean food market without the sacrifice of quality, taste, and venue to share a feast with your loved ones. So go ahead and visit them soon! They are open for lunch from 11:00am - 3:00pm and at dinner time from 5:00pm to 10:00pm. Reservations are encouraged as the place is usually full on weekday dinners and all day on weekends.
