A single woman traveling alone with dating in mind should choose a safe city with a public social life. Safety comes first, because a date with a stranger in an unfamiliar city involves more risk than the same date at home, and leaving early is harder without knowing the streets or the transit. A public social life matters because it lets her meet people in the course of an ordinary evening, in places where leaving is as easy as arriving.
Reykjaviks
Iceland has led the World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Index for 16 editions, and in 2025 it scored 92.6%, the only economy to have closed more than 90% of its gender gap. A woman on her own in Reykjavik is in the country that ranks as the most equal in the world for women.
Much of the city's social life takes place in its geothermally heated public pools. In December 2025, UNESCO added Icelandic swimming pool culture to its list of intangible cultural heritage, the first time Iceland had been honored on its own. UNESCO describes the hot tubs as informal debating parlors, where people of all ages sit together and talk, and a conversation with a stranger during an evening soak at a neighborhood pool is ordinary.
Copenhagen
Copenhagen took 1st place in the Economist Intelligence Unit's Global Liveability Index for 2025 with a score of 98.0, ending Vienna's long run at the top. It scored perfectly on stability and on 2 other categories. Tivoli Gardens, next to the central station, opened on August 15, 1843, and is the second-oldest operating amusement park in the world. It drew 4.25 million visitors in 2024, more than any other amusement park in Scandinavia. Its founder, Georg Carstensen, won permission from King Christian VIII by arguing that people who are amusing themselves do not think about politics. In summer it holds Friday rock concerts called Fredagsrock and fireworks on Saturday nights, and a first date there never runs short of things to do.
Buenos Aires
UNESCO added tango to its list of intangible cultural heritage on October 1, 2009, after a joint bid by Argentina and Uruguay. The dance grew up in the working-class neighborhoods of Buenos Aires and Montevideo in the early 20th century, from a mix of European immigrants, descendants of enslaved Africans and local criollos. Tango is now danced competitively around the world, and in 2009 a Japanese couple won the Tango World Championships in Buenos Aires itself.
The place to see it danced by locals is a milonga, a social dance event, and many milongas begin with a class, so a beginner can learn a few steps before the dancing starts. Music is played in tandas of 3 or 4 songs, separated by a short piece called a cortina that clears the floor. Invitations happen through the cabeceo. A dancer catches another's eye from across the room and nods, and the other accepts with a nod or declines by looking away, so nobody is refused out loud.
For a woman traveling alone, the system means every invitation can be declined at a distance. Visitors arrive at a milonga with different hopes. Some want a partner for a single tanda, some are open to a holiday romance, and a few hope to find a sugar daddy on vacation. The tandaends after a few songs in every case, and the next invitation is again a matter of a glance.
Dublin
In Dublin, a traditional music session is an easy way into a room of strangers, and Ireland ranked 2nd of 163 countries in the 2025 Global Peace Index, behind only Iceland. The Cobblestone, a pub at 77 North King Street in Smithfield, has been run by the Mulligan family since 1987, and The Guardian called it Ireland's most famous traditional music pub in 2021. That same year a developer proposed a 9-story hotel that would have taken over its back room, and Dublin City Council refused planning permission after protests that drew more than 400 supporters. The sessions are played in the bar itself, and a visitor standing near the musicians can ask the name of a tune and end up in a longer talk with the people next to her at the bar.
Tokyo
Tokyo's lost property figures show a city where people hand in what they find. In 2023, people handed a record ¥4.4 billion in lost cash to Tokyo police, and around ¥3.2 billion was returned to its owners. Of the 142,450 phones handed in that year, 120,222 were returned.
For a single traveler, a late night is easier to plan in a city with that record. A phone left in a taxi after dinner has a good chance of coming back, and the maps and ride bookings on it are what get a visitor home. That matters most to someone with no local friends to call for help.
Melbourne
A comedy show is a practical setting for meeting someone new. Neither person has to keep a conversation going during the performance, and a drink afterward can begin with the best joke of the night. Tickets are sold show by show, so 2 people can agree on a performer they both like before they meet.
Melbourne placed 4th in the 2025 Global Liveability Index with a score of 97.0. The city's largest annual social event is the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, which in 2025 ran from March 26 to April 20 with 690 shows across 133 venues. More than 1,000 performers took part, over 130 of them from overseas.
Montreal
The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal holds the Guinness World Record as the largest jazz festival, set in 2004, the festival's 25th anniversary year, when it drew 1,913,868 people. It lasts about 10 days each summer, with roughly 450 free outdoor performances among more than 650 concerts. A large part of downtown closes to traffic, and shows play on several free stages at once from noon until midnight. Montreal is a French- and English-speaking city, and strangers in the crowd at a free outdoor stage talk to each other in both languages.
The Limits of a Small City
Iceland has ranked as the most peaceful of 163 countries in the Global Peace Index for 17 years in a row, in an index whose 163 countries are home to 99.7% of the world's population, which makes Reykjavik the safest choice here on paper. It is also the smallest city on the list, and a visitor who meets someone at a pool on Monday will probably see that person again by Friday. That helps a friendship and complicates a fling, so it is worth deciding which of the 2 she wants before choosing the city. In a city of several million, the same evening out can be repeated with new people every night.
