My Quarantine Hand-Painted Quote Canvas Art

Quranthings is one of the newest entries on Urban Dictionary referring to the things that occurred during the quarantine period due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. There are many quaranthings and to be honest, I barely did any of the trending ones like Tik-tok, baking, cooking or becoming a plantita/o. My life was the somehow the same before and during this pandemic. The only thing that changed is that I was confined to my apartment. Being busy with work didn’t halt nor slow down. For one, it even became more tedious; as most times I had to extend work hours and don’t take my usual breaks.

With around  5 months of being on lockdown, I would say with all honesty that I do feel a little of that cabin fever and uneasy with the monotony of my daily routine. The only past time that I have had these past months are my social media and blog. And that too has become a little routinely for me. Until an opportunity to do some bedroom revamping came along. I will tell you more about that in a few days. Starting that project opened up Pandora’s box filled with good things.

Revamping my room on isn’t an easy feat, it wasn’t part of the budget. So, I make do. I gathered all the things that I already have, sort of thrift flipped furniture that my family already have and of course, DIY-ing the rest (something that I haven’t done for a while and I totally miss). I’ve always loved doing DIY, arts and crafts as I find them super therapeutic.

While planning on how I would decorate my bedroom, I wanted to include a few wall arts in there that goes with the theme and speaks volumes about me. I scoured the internet for them. It brought me to online shopping websites but found them a little costly. Moreover, I can’t find the ones that I really really like. So, I decided to look for images that I planned to have printed and framed. And then I found these digital mermaid images with beach/sea related quotes by Tanya Leigh on Livingly. I super love the illustrations because they are simple yet so pretty, plus the quotes are from female authors.

I finally found something that I totally adore. But when looking for having them printed on HQ papers and then framed or printed on canvas, I found that doings so was also going to cost me money. A few people I told about it said the illustration would look nice on canvas. I agree, but  printing on canvas even the smallest size is already around 400 to 500 bucks. I don’t want to spend 1500 pesos for a few canvas prints, thus I decided to do them myself, handmade.

I bought 3 canvasses online and the other art materials at our neighborhood bookstore with a total expense of almost 500 pesos (the cost of 1 canvas print). Once my needed supplies were complete, I started painting and hoped for the best LOL. The illustrations by Tanya Leigh have the drawings in white on a teal background. The color wasn’t available at the store; I didn’t want to mix colors to achieve that, so I settled for what was available: Ultramarine. The shade was in between Navy and royal blue. Also, isn’t the color just fitting with the illustration that I’m going to do?

Unfortunately, the canvases that I bought weren’t primed yet. Because of that I had to do 3-4 coatings so that the white won’t show and then I let them airdry overnight. Although, I had the mistake of not using a foam roller and just used the fibered one that I already have. This made the base/background a little textured and not smooth. But it’s ok, it’s not too obvious.

The following day, I started drawing and lettering using pencil first, just to be sure where I needed to paint. I didn’t have to erase the pencil tracings because the white paint completely covered them, also they are faint due to the dark color of my background.  The original illustrations by Tanya Leigh were digital and the circles looked like bubbles, which I can’t achieve using even the thinnest paint brush. Thus, I decided to do dots that resembles bubbles and galaxy stars instead – well, I guess consider this as my own spin from the original illustrations and somehow putting my own stamp on these artworks.

I did one canvas a day every after my shift for three consecutive days. It was my way to de stress after a day of dealing with hard and tedious cases. I super loved how they turned out! They look good! And I’m pretty sure they are perfect to where I’m going to put them up. Pardon me as I tap myself on the shoulder for a job well done LOL!

With being confined at home and limited stuff to do, finding solace in art is truly a therapy and a stress-reliever. What do you guys think of my canvas artwork? Did you do any arts and crafts during this quarantine? I have a couple more DIYs that I want to complete, and I’ll try to blog about them, if not, I’ll share them on my social media instead. Also, stay tuned for my bedroom makeover post and see where these artworks fall into the whole project.
