Is It Time To Call In The Pros? Jobs For Homeowners To Avoid

When you become a homeowner, you learn that there are always jobs to do. In many cases, when it comes to maintenance and repairs, you can take on the task yourself, but there are certain scenarios that demand expertise and experience. In this guide, we’ll discuss when it’s time to call in the pros.

Roofing issues
If you have problems with your roof, it may be tempting to scale a ladder and take a look. The trouble with roofing issues is that they pose risks to health and safety, as well as your home. Climbing up ladders and walking on roofs without the relevant equipment and training can result in serious, potentially life-threatening injuries. If you’re concerned about missing tiles or storm damage, contact a local roofing company.

Ask friends and neighbors for recommendations and read reviews before you decide which firm to hire. It’s always beneficial to get warning signs checked out, as problems can get worse, especially during the winter when the weather can be unpredictable. Spending money on your roof will prevent further damage and add value when you come to sell the house.

Pests
Many of us have found ourselves in a situation where we are sharing our home with uninvited guests. Pests can be a major problem for homeowners. Intruders can cause damage and they reproduce quickly, meaning that a minor issue can spiral rapidly. If you are worried about household pests, it’s best to seek advice as soon as possible. Signs to look out for include droppings, scratch marks and holes in walls and floors, scrabbling noises and bite marks in wooden structures. Pest control experts can not only eliminate the issue but they will also provide advice and implement measures to prevent pests from accessing the premises in the future.

Damp
Damp is a very common problem in older properties. The most common indicators are a musty smell and discolored patches on the walls or ceilings. Damp occurs when excess moisture seeps into the home. If you notice damp spots on your walls, or your home has an unpleasant, stale odor, contact damp proofing experts. There are solutions, and it’s best to act swiftly to protect your home and save money in the long run.

Hazardous materials
If you are renovating an old house you recently bought, or you’re doing work to an outhouse, for example, you may stumble across hazardous materials, such as asbestos. If this is the case, contact professionals with experience in moving chemicals and potentially harmful waste safely. Do not attempt to move or inspect anything that could be hazardous yourself. Seal off the area to prevent children and pets from exposure and let the experts do their job.

Destructive building work
If you’re a fan of TV makeover shows, you may assume that it’s relatively easy and really fun to knock down walls and pave the way for an extension or a new kitchen-diner layout. While it’s true that there are many tasks you can take on yourself when remodeling or revamping your home, destructive building work is best left to the pros. If you arm yourself with heavy-duty tools and start bashing bricks and mortar, there is a risk that you could damage the structure of the house and injure yourself. When planning any type of home renovation project, contact reputable companies, compare quotes and discuss ideas with representatives before you decide which business to hire.

Plumbing
Plumbing problems range from minor issues like leaking faucets or blocked toilets to complex, emergency situations. Many people will be able to fix the most basic plumbing problems, but if there is a risk of doing more harm than good, or you’re approaching a job without knowing what the cause of the problem is, it’s best to get in touch with experienced plumbers. If you make the wrong move, there is a risk of doing more damage and you could end up spending a substantial amount of money to call a plumber out urgently. If you’re fixing small problems, use video tutorials to guide you. If you’re not confident, resist the temptation to try and enlist the help of a local plumbing firm.

Most homeowners feel like they have a never-ending list of jobs to do around the house. Many of us like DIY and we’re happy to take on maintenance tasks, but there are some jobs that are best left to the professionals. If there are health and safety risks, there are complex problems, or there is a risk of causing further damage, call in the experts.

  1. Knowing my husband, he'll try to do do and repairs things first and more often, he has caused more damage to it than fix it. Haha I agree these should be left for the profs.

  2. So much info to get here. Any details about our homes can be costly so doing research or official help from pros can be game changers.. but solving plumbing issues can be irritating

  6. Of all you've mentioned above, I am more concern about the plumbing. Having a functional and not damaged water system is the key to a long-term, and peaceful homeowner.

  7. We're in the process of moving in with my folks for a few months while our house is being constructed. We need to deal with a termite problem, but they cost an arm in the Philippines. We've been watching DIY termite treatment and we're considering doing that over getting a company to do it for us.
