Don’t you just love it when you set expectations and they don’t disappoint? This is exactly what I experience during one of my gastronomic conquests. I had a scheduled catch-up with one of my best college friends one Sunday afternoon. I didn’t ate that morning or lunch even, so I was pretty much dying of hunger when we met up late that afternoon.
I opened my Zomato app and searched for restaurants in and around Greenhills and filtering them via ratings. Hai Chix and Steaks caught my eye and there were a lot of favorable reviews about it. I trusted my guts and suggested this place to my friend who agreed right then and there.
Hai Chix & Steaks is a restaurant where east meets west. It is located on the second floor a building that house PNB along Missouri St. There’s a big mural on the parking area so it’s not really that hard to miss, especially that Missouri St isn’t a long stretch and the building is just across Gloria Maris.
We took a flight of stairs and entered a dining hall that is very inviting and screams millennial hipster: wooden tables matching with steel chair, string lights across the room and a couple of signage written on chalkboards. I definitely love the ambiance, but when it comes to food photography, the yellow light is my enemy. But that can be fixed, and I personally enjoyed how cozy that place was.
A few minutes later, the place was packed with people. That’s a good sign right? It only means we went to the right place to fill our tummies. Good thing that we get to order before customers came pouring. Since it’s just the two of us and we’re tiny little ladies, we decided to just order 2 menu entries:
Butter Garlic Shrimp - at first I was a bit disappointed that it only contained 5 pieces of shrimps but that was compensated by a couple of bread. I thought at first we were going to get satiated by the amount of oil in it. A tore a piece from the bread and dipped it in that oil and toasted garlic sauce, and then I put it in my mouth and the explosion of flavor was so good! This isn't just an appetizer as you can also eat this as a viand and with rice.
Hainanese Chicken Rice - includes a quarter of a chicken (your choice of part), a cup of Hainanese chicken rice and sauces. The rice itself is packed full of flavor already, it was so good that my friend who was on a no-carbs diet, but she liked the rice so much that we had to order another cup. I love the perfect gingery flavor of the chicken. I usually put a lot of the grated ginger mixed with Hoisin sauce with the chicken and every bite is heaven.
At first we were thinking why the brand name Hai Chix and Steaks. Well that's basically the stars of this restaurant: the Hainanese chicken and the steaks. I don't think it's a fusion restaurant but a restaurant that offers its clientele one of the bests of the east and the west. We love everything that we got to try at Hai Chix. I'm happy that with basically just two dishes, I'm already sold! that's why I have to go back and try their steaks and the cashew sans rival cake which are both best sellers at Hai Chix.
