LAVA Cheese Tarts - SM Megamall

Ahhh cheese... I love cheese! In my food, as a snack and in my desserts! Make me eat cheese, even the stinky ones, I.will.eat.it. What more if they're the focal point of my dessert. Just like those cheese tarts that are becoming famous among food lovers and the populate.

I reviewed one of the famous cheese tarts in the world - Pablo. But I don't think it's fair to stop just right there. So the quest to trying most if not all of the cheese available in the metro begins. As for now let's put the spotlight on LAVA Cheese Tarts.

First things first, what I love about LAVA is that it is a local brand by Filipino entrepreneurs. The cheese tarts and coffee that they offer will not just reward your taste buds but also our local farmers that make sure you get the best of the best ingredients. I’ve read that one of the 4 artisanal cheese that they use for the tarts is from Malagos in Davao.

I’ve visited their SM Megamall stall twice to get my fix of these cheese tarts. It’s a small stall in front pf National Bookstore compared to their flagship store in SM Aura. So that leaves me ordering these tarts to go; and I’m glad that they have a box where these delicate cheese tarts can be placed. This is a plus point for me, since whenever I buy from their stall, I always have them as take outs.

Lava Cheese Tarts for now has two variants: original and Gorgonzola-honey. The cheese tarts are baked to perfection; a golden brown top layer, soft filling with sweet and tangy flavor, sweet crumbly crust  and perfect blend of 4 locally-made artisanal cheeses. Although every time I buy from LAVA, the cheese filling always has these whipped consistency and not gooey or flowing like lava. I like it still;maybe if I put it in the oven toaster or microwave I will get that type of consistency. But I prefer it in its more solid state than its other form.

Original Flavor - made of 4 locally-sourced artisanal cheeses including cheese from Malagos. I love the soft biscuit texture of the crust which makes me enjoy it with every bite. I'm not really into those tarts that have flaky crusts. The cheese filling is soft and mild.
Gorgonzola and Honey - this is the strong and sharp variant. Before they put it in the box, the staff will pour some honey on it. The Gorgonzola reminds me of the taste of quezo de bola. The sweetness of the honey somehow lessens or neutralizes the strong flavor of the Gorgonzola. I like this, but the original still is my go-to between the two choices.
By the way, you can enjoy these cheese tarts from Lava in four ways: molten - fresh out of Lava store; chilled - out of the fridge, frozen - just like ice cream out of the freezer or hot  - from oven toaster or microwave. Lava has 3 branches so far: SM Aura, SM Megamall and SM North EDSA.
