Asian Flavors at Spice Cafe - City Garden Grand Hotel

We Filipinos love to eat and unquestionably food is the basis of our social life. I don’t know for sure if it is only Filipinos who eat three full meals a day with snacking in between. Filipino would go to extreme measures just to satisfy their craving and tummies. We are well-known also for some legendary feasting.

And then there’s the buffet culture. More often than not, eating out at a buffet is synonymous to celebration for us. I’m not surprised at all, we revel about almost anything just to have an excuse to go to a buffet. After all, where else can you try something without committing to a full dish? Buffets, in addition is a great way to be able to sample a wide variety of items from international cuisines.

Spice Café is an all-day dining restaurant located at City Garden Grand Hotel which bids sumptuous breakfast buffets. Spice Cafe offers some of the best international cuisine, serving a tantalizing collection of dishes that are suitable for family gatherings and large groups. From breakfast dishes to their latest Asian flavors line, its extensive menu is reflective of the cafe’s efforts to cater to every palate.

Recently, they started to offer a line of Asian flavors with an emphasis to Japanese dishes. I checked those latest offerings together with my fellow foodies on a gloomy afternoon which was perfect despite fears getting stranded in Makati due to heaven rain, because they were going to serve us different popular kinds of soup around Asia.

Sushi Boat - contains a variety of sushi, maki and sashimi.

Crazy Maki - is a sushi roll, usually made inside-out, containing tamago, crab meat then sprinkled with tempura bits.

Tuna Sashimi - is a Japanese delicacy of very fresh raw Tuna fish meat sliced into thin pieces.

California Maki - is a makizushi sushi roll, usually made inside-out, containing cucumber, crab meat or imitation crab, and avocado or mango then sprinkled with masago (capelin roe).

Salmon and Tempura Sushi Maki - sushi is a roll made with sticky rice, shrimp tempura, salmon and nori (dried seaweed).

Chicken Katsu - deep fried panko-breaded chicken that is sliced into bite-sized pieces or strips.

Ebi Tempura - a Japanese dish consisting of shrimp that have been battered and deep fried.

Chicken Yakitori - a Japanese type of skewered chicken grilled over a charcoal fire seasoned with tare sauce.

Prawn Yakisoba - a classic Japanese stir fry buckwheat noodles dish with prawn, seasoned with a sweet & savory sauce.

Seafood Laksa - Southeast Asian spicy noodle soup consisting of rice noodles or rice vermicelli with squid and mussels.

Seafood Kaffir - hot and sour soup using kaffir lime leaves.

Japanese Soft Cheesecake - Japanese cheesecake also known as cotton cheesecake which is a type of sponge cake made with cream cheese, butter, sugar, whipped cream and eggs, and is traditionally made in a bain-marie. This was covered in whipped cream and topped with ripe mango slices and cherries.

The dishes that we got to try were great. I am a big fan of sashimi and maki, especially sashimi, and I enjoyed each variety that were served. The Prawn Yakisoba, Chicken Yakitori, Chicken Katsu and Ebi Tempura were ok as well, but nothing spectacular. The soups were heart-warming especially on rainy days. The Japanese cheesecake though is very different different from what I've tried before. Spice Cafe's version was moist or a bit wet compared to how the authentic ones' consistencies. Some of the mango slicing on top was sour too. I don't know if Spice Cafe is aiming for the authentic taste for their Asian/Japanese dishes or tailored for the  Filipino palate.

Spice Cafe is very spacious with elegant interiors and was very well lit. It can house more or less than a 100 pax. Their service is one aspect that they can truly improve on as during the time of our visit, it seemed that there were few crew that was tending to us and we really needed to call their attention quite a few times. They also offer regular promotions and live bands during the night. Check out their social media sites to know the latest promos and events.
