Soru Izakaya - Tomas Morato, QC

One of the cuisines that I miss  eating so much while on community quarantine is Japanese cuisine. Unfortunately, the markets and groceries that are near our house don’t offer Japanese ingredients, so there’s no way for me and my family to cook any Japanese dishes. Just before this lockdown, I think I was eating Japanese dishes once or twice a week. I was even invited to an FMU at Soru Izakaya in Tomas Morato. I have visited Soru Izakaya in Burgos Circle in BGC a couple of times in the past, but this was the first time I visited one of their branches in QC.

An izakaya is a type of gastropub in Japan that serves a variety of small, inexpensive dishes and snacks to accompany alcoholic beverages. The setting is mostly casual and is perfect for after work drinks with officemates. Soru Izakaya was influenced by the Robatayaki style of izakaya wherein customers sit around an open hearth and drink at a relaxed pace while a Teppan Chef cooks their food.

Visually, Soru Izakayawas inspired by the whimsical art style of bishoujo (pretty girl) manga, traditional Japanese art, the wild and colorful Tokyo night life, and the new wave of speakeasy cocktail bars. Soru Izakaya brings forth the taste of the New Nippon, a modern after-work gastropub, imbued with a traditional menu of our favorite Japanese eats, with a dash of contemporary flavor.

A tasteful blend of everything from filling teppan dishes, fresh sashimi and sushi plates, accustomed donburi bowls, appetizing and mouthwatering ramen noodles, to new savory yakitori combinations, modern maki roll flavors, ingenious twists with piquant taste on tempura, salmon, miso dishes and Japanese salads, smooth and delightful freshly concocted cocktails and beverages.

Enhanced by contemporary, sophisticated interior design, and graphic design reminiscent of Tokyo street art culture, Soru Izakaya completes the whole modern Japan experience by tapping into your senses and feeding your craving soul.

I got to enjoy what Soru Izakaya’s offerings which included their Unlimited Hotpot offering that run from  January to February of this year. I’m not sure if they will be offering it again after the lockdown, but I hope they will. Soru Izakaya’s Nabe Special was prized at Php599 per person, which inlcuded unlimited refills of: Broth (choice of two among Tonkotsu, Spicy Tonkotsu, Sukiyaki, Curry, Chicken, Miso and Spicy Miso), Meat (beef, chicken and pork); Seafood (shrimp, clams, mussels, squid and fish fillet); Assorted balls and kani; Noodles (vermicelli, glass noodles and egg noodles); Entrees (gyoza, yakisoba, tempura, beef bowl, pork bowl, smoked pork bowl, chicken wings, vegetable tempura, takoyaki); Vegetables (cabbage, carrots, squash, white onions, enoki, bokchoy, corn, taro, kangkong and black fungus) and Side dishes (kimchi, potato marble, kakiage, cucumber, steamed rice and chahan).

Aside from the hotpot, we were also treated with Soru Izakaya’s colorful signature Japanese rolls, which included: Gyu Maki (sliced beef strips, seasoned shiitake mushrooms, cream cheese and tamago topped onsen egg) and Tori Kasai Maki (chicken thigh, cream cheese and kimchi topped with torched cheese). The colorful decoration on the plate is actually colored Japanese mayonnaise.

I’ve always loved the presentation and the taste of Soru Izakaya’s rolls. I just hope that they will bring back their unlimited hotpot soon. Lastly, I want to say thanks for the hotpot photos to my friend, Gel Jose. You can follow her foodie journey at facebook.com/beingjellybeans and instagram.com/beingjellybeans.
