Straight Out of the 1920s: The Penthouse 8747

“And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.” - F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby. A beautiful quote from one of my favorite movies and books of the 1920s era. If you don't know it yet, though I always mention in a lot of my blog posts, I have a penchant for anything vintage most especially if it belongs to the Roaring 20s era.

An era full of fire-out, decadent, ridiculous parties; androgynous fashion and beautiful blues and jazz music. Better known as the Great Gatsby where parties are epic, complete with elaborate platforms, singing, dancing, movie stars, light shows, sexy flappers and wasted money (for anything glamorous). Not to forget the beautiful art and architecture known as the art deco or noveau.

Thus, a visit to The Penthouse 8747 definitely made my heart skipped a bit. It is a classic and chic lounge that is greatly inspired by my favorite time period of all time. The Penthouse 8747 is a rooftop bar and used to be a speakeasy place that was launched in 2016. An elegant place with walls and furniture decked in bold geometric forms, lush velvet couches, vintage-looking chandeliers and gold-brown accents, that surely represented luxury, glamour and exuberance.

It houses a function hall that can accommodate 400 people for major events and gatherings and an open air balcony area that can hold 200 pax that gives its guests a great view of the Ayala Triangle Gardens, the amazing view of the Makati Skyline and its CBD. I consider and proclaim myself as a sucker for roof deck bars and sunsets,  so this restobar definitely took me by awe.

As for the food, Chef Mike Genaro offers fusion dishes inspired by his former work as a chef in a cruise line that caters to Caribbean and European destinations. Beverages are also signature ones curated by Head Mixologist/Bar Manager Marnel Masallo together with his skilled crew. Below are the menu items that we got to try:

Asian Nachos - what will immediately catch your attention with this appetizer is how well it is plated. They look beautiful that you don't want to eat them and ruin the presentation. Also it is very different from other nacho dishes, as the chips and toppings are layered on top of the other; unlike what we are used to from other restos; where they just pour the chips on a platter and top it with ingredients. You get to enjoy the toppings only on the top most chips and you get blank chips under. The mango's sweetness cuts anything that is salty and spicy that's in there. Also, the chips/wanton wrappers are huge and crispy. I actually think these are healthy-a$$ nachos (and I mean that in a good way ha!). Truly, they are your fancy and upscale nachos.

Chicken Parmigiana Wrap – chicken breast with parmigiana sauce and cumin wrapped in tortilla. The Italian and Middle Eastern flavors were a lovely blend; flavor explosion guaranteed! It came with Garlic aioli sauce but it actually doesn’t need any sauce as it is already tasty by itself. Plus it came with a side of fries thus making it a complete and heavy meal. Perfect before chugging down any alcoholic beverage to prevent getting any tummy aches from ingesting alcohol on an empty stomach.

Shrimp Pesto Pasta - not your ordinary pesto pasta since the sauce has "malunggay" (moringa) leaves besides the basil mixed with nuts, cream and olive oil. I like that I didn't taste the bitter aspect of the malunggay and that it was rich and creamy. Also they did not scrimped on the amount of shrimp that they included in this pasta dish, which is a plus point to say the least. This has got to be my favorite among all the dishes that we tried.

Seafood Caponata Flatbread Pizza - Caponata is a Sicilian eggplant dish consisting of a cooked vegetable salad made from chopped fried eggplant and celery seasoned with sweetened vinegar, with capers in a sweet and sour sauce. I have many reasons why I like this pizza. I like that it used a flat bread, the crust is not too thin and also not too thick, just the right and enjoyable thickness. Another thing is that it has an ample amount of eggplant, zucchini, shrimp, olives and anchovies! When most people doesn't like anchovies, I am someone who loves it on my pizza, I like how it gives a burst of flavor and saltiness in every bite. Although I think that liking anchovies is an acquired taste but everyone should give it a try. And lastly look at how generous the amount of toppings on this pizza?! This also came with a buffalo sauce dip but for me, it doesn't need it at all. It was already packed with flavor on its own.

Now on to the exciting part of the night: The Penthouse 9747's top two signature cocktails that came with witty names:

Jellous Lover - consists of champagne, strawberry syrup with a rose wine jelly at the bottom of the glass and topped with a strawberry and blueberry. This was a super cool to drink and seriously Instagram and Boomerang worthy. On the sweeter side and best for wine lovers who wants to try something unique and adventurous.

Great Escape - this one on the other hand is composed of gin, fresh grape fruit juice, rosemary syrup topped with champagne and fresh rosemary leaves. I love this one! You can’t even taste the alcohol in it plus it was very aromatic. A refreshing drink for all the seasons of the year. I highly recommend this one if ever you find yourself at The Penthouse (and you must go!)

The music being played at The Penthouse 8747 is not only confined to jazz and blues anymore. It now uses modern music to reflect the excitement of the modern times to which its current clienteles: mostly millennials and yuppies, can relate to. Music are often provided by well-known DJs both local and international.

I wish I could have dressed up to complete the whole experience when I visited, because I was too casual. But the crowd was such a mix of people: some were fancy some were just chill; so yeah, I guess I was on middle-ground. Also, I'm excited to bring my friends here, especially when they vacation to the Philippines. And maybe next time The Penthouse 8747 will hold a themed event and I'll be lucky to be invited, I would most definitely show up dressed like Daisy Buchanan or Zelda Fitzgerald. ;-)
