Virtual Reality and Food Park In One: The Garage at City of Dreams Manila

Whether you want to accept and believe it or not, we are in the age of virtual reality. Virtual reality was only possible in the world of sci-fi movies and CGI a few years back and now it is slowly being part of our “reality”. With the advent of the internet and handheld media systems that plunge the user into 360 degrees video, virtual reality technology is changing how stories are told and created.

Last Sunday, I attended the grand opening of The Garage at City of Dreams with my fellow foodie/blogger friends where we were able to experience the immersive, multi-sensory, and interactive narratives of Virtual Reality and at the same grab some sumptuous eats offered by the various indoor food trucks inside the newest attraction inside City of Dreams of Manila: The Garage.

The Garage at City of Dreams Manila is a VR Zone and food park set in a modern industrial-inspired and air-conditioned space. The VR Zone features a new generation entertainment facility produced by a leading Japanese video game development company, Bandai Namco Amusement. This VR Zone is complemented by a set of carefully curated food and beverage trucks and trailers.

The Garage is located on the upper ground floor occupying 2,714 sqm. of space which will operate daily from 10:00 am to 2:00 am. It has a seating capacity of 500+ pax. The VR + Food park has a modern industrial interiors by Malherbe Design in collaboration with Westar Architectural Interior Design; and graffiti artworks by Kookoo Ramos and Deejae Paeste.

The Garage’s VR Zone was produced by Bandai Namco Amusement, a leading video game development company hailing from Japan. It features a new generation entertainment using top-of-class VR technology that delivers a startling, realistic experience. As of the moment there are 3 available VR activities: Mario Kart Arcade GP VR, Hospital Escape Terror, Ski Rodeo. Entrance to the activity area is free and ticket prices for the VR zone are as follows: One activity:  P 450 nett / three activities: P1, 200 nett / Ski Rodeo for two: P 800 nett / Mario Kart only (4 PAX):P1, 600 nett / Horror Room (4 PAX): P 1, 600 nett

Mario Kart Arcade GP VR
The game produced by Bandai Namco Amusement under license from Nintendo, which has a maximum number of four (4) participants and lasts up to three minutes, will let you “be in the driver’s seat” playing as Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, or Yoshi. A handle is provided for maneuvering as well as pedals for braking (left pedal) to reduce the kart’s speed and accelerating (right pedal) to increase the kart’s speed.

Reach out your hands to catch useful items hanging mid-air in balloons such as the hammer to strike a chosen opponent over the top of their kart to cause damage; the banana which has to be thrown in the direction of where you want to place it in order to cause damage to an opponent who drives over it; or the green shell which can be thrown to cause damage to opponents. Before starting the game, the participant will be told to raise both of his/her hands if he/she chooses to quit midway.

Hospital Escape Terror
This immersive horror room game can be played by up to four (4) individuals. The simulation game starts with the story of you finding yourself completely restrained in a wheelchair. Unaware of who has done this and for what purpose, you start to make your way through the dark, abandoned hospital to escape. Participants of the game should altogether escape within the time limit of 9 minutes. To navigate the game, move forward and backward by pushing or pulling the lever on your left side. To select your route, point the flashlight (located on your right side) towards the icon of your choice, and press the button to select.

If one of the participants dies, all participants will be executed. Once the player reaches the midway point, he/she cannot continue unless all of the players have arrived. If a participant quits midway, all participants will still be executed. To quit, press the button on your left side. For those who have tried the game before, the experience changes according to registration order. To try other ones, please register in a different order each time.

Ski Rodeo
A steep downhill simulator game, Ski Rodeo can be played in pairs. Before starting the game, the player’s hands should be placed on the black handles from below before holding the grips. If the handles are loose, the player can turn his/her hand once to tighten so it won’t come out.

To navigate the game, effectively use the ‘ski’s’ edge to turn or to move it left or right to make sharp turns.  If the participant is doing well, he/she will be seeing white snow dusts on his/her feet. The time limit to finish the course is two minutes. Upon reaching the goal, the participant can check his/her score on the on the course board. If the player wants to quit midway, he/she is advised to squat in place.

When you’re done playing the VR games you can get some grub from the various food choices inside the park. Most of the food trucks inside are already well-known restaurants in the metro offering Japanese, Filipino, American, Vietnamese, Mexican, and Italian dishes. Food and Beverage Outlets includes: El Chupacabra, Farmacy, Hokkaido Ramen Santouka, Katsu Sora, Little Flour, Pink’s Hotdog, Pizza Grigliata, Chocol8, Juiced, and The Roaster by City of Dreams Manila.
