Draft Gastropub Lunch Specials and Lenten Menu

Did you know that The Eagle in Clerkenwell, London, England is the the first pub to which the term "gastropub" was applied? A gastropub is a bar and restaurant that serves high-end beer and food items. The term originated coined in the 1990s, but similar pubs already existed during the 1980s. Traditionally, British pubs were drinking establishments and little emphasis was placed on the serving of food

The serving of food in these drinking places reinvigorated both pub culture and dining. The gastropub phenomenon took off in the United States in the early 1990s specially in Las Vegas. And not long after that it has reached the Philippines to cater to the growing number of British expats and other nationalities who have find work and home in the PH.

What I love about gastropubs is that they are more than just those dim and cozy places where you can spend a casual time enjoying craft beers, liquors and cocktails; a lot of pubs nowadays offer great grubs as well. One of the established pubs in Metro Manila is DRAFT Restaurant & Brewery and just more than a week ago, I trekked all the way to Greenbelt Makati to attend their St. Patrick’s Day Festivities.

Aside from drinking several cans of Irish beers, I, together with my foodie friends also sampled Draft’s Lunch Menu Specials and also their Lenten Menu. The Lunch Specials are mostly rice meals and from what I heard they were a hit that they’re making another comeback. They’re available from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm every day. While the Lent Menu is completely free from beef, chicken or pork meat and will be available during the Holy Week.

Lunch Specials

Fish and Chips - fish and chips is a hot dish of English origin consisting of fried fish in batter served with chips or fries.

Fried Chicken and Rice - battered chicken and then deep fried to crispy perfection with white rice and veggies

Pork and Chicken BBQ Rice - grilled chicken cutlets and pork with white rice and veggies

Salisbury Steak - blend of ground beef and other ingredients served with gravy, white rice and veggies

Chorizo Rice Bowl - sliced chorizo sausage with seasoned rice, veggies, and topped with sunny side up egg

Express Tapa - cured beef, sunny side up egg, white rice, veggies and chicharon

Lenten Menu:

Fish Fillet Burger with Fries
- battered fish deep fried to a great crisp in burger buns

Seafood Lenguine - a popular multi-seafood pasta dish a thick red arrabiata sauce.

Shrimp Croquettas - consist of a thick mashed potatoes mixed with tender shrimps, creating a crunchy fritter with a warm, gooey center.

I liked every dish but I gotta say, my two faves were the Fish Fillet Burger and the Tapa Express. The Fish Fillet Burger had a very nice crunch and texture to it, plus really tasty and perfect with the equally crispy fries. The Tapa Express was really on point and I love that it has that spicy kick that I can tolerate. The beef meat was savoury and tender, most definitely.

Eating during Lent doesn’t mean one should sacrifice flavor as what were exemplified with Draft’s Lenten Menu. Probably after you’ve done your Visita Iglesia you can fill up with these tasty dishes. By the way Draft has other branches in Power Plant Mall, Rockwell; Molito Commercial Complex, Alabang, Muntinlupa City and Ayala Malls The 30th, Pasig City.
