I was born and raised in Pasig, a true blooded Batang Pasig. I love my hometown, I’ve lived somewhere for a couple of years due to work but being away from family was hard, so I decided to go live near them again. They say Pasig has the worst traffic jams at the moment, but I guess one just needs to get used to it, also that it won’t get better anytime soon. I don’t care, because nothing beats being “home”.
Another thing that I love about my hometown is that you can easily go to just anywhere around Metro Manila because like Mandaluyong it’s at the center (well, almost). Want nature? Travel a few hours to Rizal. Want some city life fix? Travel a few hours to BGC, Makati, Mandaluyong, San Juan or Quezon City. Moreover, this city also never ceases to surprise me with its hidden gems, including gastronomic finds.
Roughly two weeks ago, I visited this homegrown café at the heart of Pasig that offers delicious American dishes – Buffalo Swing Café. This humble hole in the wall café in Barangay Caniogan Pasig City owned by Ingrid Mediarito and operated by the help of her family.
Ms. Ingrid, also a true blooded Batang Pasig and a teacher by profession, is not a novice when it comes to food, as she is a connoisseur when it comes to baking and cooking. Buffalo Swing Café shares the same space with Ms. Ingrid’s baking supplies store, and she is also a consultant with two big food brands.
Buffalo Swing Café offers sumptuous chicken wings flavor varieties, thin crust pizzas, hearty meals, freshly baked desserts selection, coffee and chocolate. But the star of this café are their chicken wings and they have a great selection of the specialty chicken wing flavors, at the best price and value. Buffalo Swing is the perfect place for chicken wings lover, just like myself, with 9 flavors to choose from, and these wings will take your taste buds on a roller coaster ride of flavors.
Buffalo Swing Café’s chicken wings are priced at Php155 for 5 pieces (one flavor) if you want to add some more, you get some discount, like if you order 10 pieces instead of paying Php 310 you’ll only have to pay Php 300, the it’s Php585 (20 pieces, two flavors) and Php1150 (40 pieces, two flavors). If you need more than for say like a party or potluck, just inquire. We tried 7 out of the 9 flavors:
Spicy Salted Egg – coated with salted egg yolk, red and green chili peppers and topped with Thai curry leaves. Inspired by Singaporean salted egg dishes.
Buffalo Swing – traditional flavor of Buffalo Wings and you can choose from Hot (mild), Wild (medium) and Blazing (super spicy)
Salt and Pepper – chicken wings spiced with salt and pepper and topped with loads of chilies and chopped garlic.
American BBQ – classic buffalo chicken wings flavor and a little bit on the spicy side
Butter Parmesan – coated with melted butter sauce and Parmesan cheese
Honey Soy Sesame – chicken wings coated with Korean honey soy sauce sprinkled with sesame seeds.
Flamin’ Lemon – chicken wings coated with Cajun style spices with slices of lemon that you need to squeeze on the wings.
Four Cheese with Garlic Pizza – thin crust pizza topped with generous amounts of Cheddar, Mozzarella, Parmesan and cream cheeses and garlic.
Meat Overload – thin crust pizza topped with Pepperoni, Hungarian sausage, breakfast sausage, beef toppings and caramelized onions
Aligue Cream Pasta – aligue (crab roe) cream-based pasta topped with shrimps, chopped basil leaves and Parmesan cheese
Spanish Sardines and Olives Pasta – oil-based pasta dish with Spanish sardines flakes, black olives, chopped tomatoes, chopped basil leaves and Parmesan cheese.
For our drinks we had Rootbeer Float (which uses legit A&W Rootbeer), House Blend Iced Tea, Blue Lemonade, Pink Lychee Lemonade, Strawberry Red Iced Tea and Cucumber Lemonade. I’m not a fan of rootbeers but that one looked so yummy with the melting vanilla ice cream on top of it. The other drinks were refreshing as well.
So, among the chicken wings, my top 3 are: Butter Parmesan, Flamin’ Lemon and Spicy Salted Egg. The Butter Parmesan was really addictive, combining butter and cheese, you might think it’ll be a tad too salty, but the wings were nothing but awesome, it had this milky-salty flavor that I can’t get enough of. I loved the Flamin Lemon because of the Cajun/Creole flavor of it, it’s something new for a chicken wing flavor, but I love anything Cajun and this flavor has a high probability to become my ultimate favorite. As for Spicy Salted Egg, it wasn’t that spicy, so I was able to tolerate it. I love salted egg; I can eat that thing just with hit steaming rice. Make a sauce out of it and coat chicken wings with that, man, that’s perfection! Eat these spicy salted egg chicken wings with the Thai curry leaves sprinkled on it for a more wow experience.
All the other chicken wings flavors are very good as well, I just had to pick my top 3. Another thing that I like about their chicken wings are that they are cooked very well. It’s juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside and nothing of that repugnant or stench taste that you get from poorly prepared and cooked red meat. Buffalo Swing Café follows a very meticulous way of prepping and cooking their chicken because this type of meat can easily get hold of cross contamination.
Both pizzas were equally great, but being a cheese lover, I liked the Four Cheese and Garlic pizza. I’m not a pizza kind of girl and when I eat pizza, I prefer the ones with less toppings but packed with flavor, so this really appealed to my palate. As for the pastas, all were delicious, but all of us came to an agreement that, that Aligue Cream Pasta was the star of that afternoon. Buffalo Swing uses a high-quality aligue sauce from a local seller as well and they don’t scrimp on the aligue sauce, you can really taste it in every bite, not just hints of it, it’s so legit!
As much as I want to keep this a secret, you know... like a hometown hidden gem, but their offerings, especially their chicken wings are that darn good! If you're not from Pasig or nearby towns around it, well, I'm telling you, it's worth the visit!
