Bags: Items of Fashion and Function

Bags have always been a part a woman’s fashion. But back in the day, a bag is a common tool in the form of a non-rigid container. The use of bags predates recorded history, with the earliest bags being no more than lengths of animal skin, cotton, or woven plant fibers, folded up at the edges and secured in that shape with strings of the same material.

Despite their simplicity, bags have been fundamental for the development of human civilization, as they allow people to easily collect loose materials such as berries or food grains, and to transport more items than could readily be carried in the hands. The word probably has its origins in the Norse word baggi.

Early modern Europeans wore purses for one sole purpose: to carry coins. Purses were made of soft fabric or leather and were worn by men as often as ladies; the Scottish sporran is a survival of this custom. In the 17th century, young girls were taught embroidery as a necessary skill for marriage; this also helped them make very beautiful handbags.

By the late 18th century, fashions in Europe were moving towards a slender shape for these accessories, inspired by the silhouettes of Ancient Greece and Rome. Women wanted purses that would not be bulky or untidy in appearance, so reticules were designed. Reticules were made of fine fabrics like silk and velvet, carried with wrist straps. First becoming popular in France, they crossed over into Britain, where they became known as "indispensables." Men, however, did not adopt the trend. They used purses and pockets, which became popular in men's trousers.

I rarely buy small bags though because I carry with me everyday essentials wherever I go. Everyone knows you need at least three bags and that's just to get you through everyday life. So most often than not, I buy large totes, backpacks and crossbody bags. Not only that they are easy to carry, I can also put a lot of things in them.

A tote bag is a medium to large bag with two straps and an open top. Backpacks, on the other hand, is a bag with shoulder straps that allow it to be carried on one's back. While cross-body bags are those one long strap that crosses over the body, with the bag resting at the front by the waist. They are sometimes also called as sling bag which has one long, wide strap that crosses over the body, with the bag resting on the back.

At the moment, I don’t have much crossbody bags and I’m looking into some red and and white crossbody bag. White ones are very easy to pair with just about any outfit because it is considered as a neutral and universal color that can be worn by anyone and with all color combinations. On the other hand, a red crossbody bag gives any plain outfit a pop of color. Red is a bright, warm color that evokes strong emotions and gives one a very edgy or sophisticated look.

But nowadays, bags and purses have been an essential and functional part of both men and women’s everyday life and fashion. I know some ladies that collect bags; although I have a lot of bags, I purchase them more for their use more than building a collection. I usually opt for the ones that gives me more space and function. I also rarely look into the brand of the bags. As long as they look sturdy, of great quality and will last for years, I would buy them.
