How to Start a Successful Travel Blog From Scratch

You may think that it is only young people without ties that can start a successful travel blog from scratch. But the truth is that anyone can do it; whether you’re a mum or a retiree. However, before you start it is important to note that this job does not just involve travelling to different places and writing about them. You need to do a lot of background work to ensure your travel blog is successful.

Get Your Site
You need a domain name and host. It is best to avoid the free sites and pay for these; this will ensure you have a site which is your brand name and not one that simply has it in the title (that’s usually too long). It’s a good idea to keep the name of your blog short; it will make it more memorable.

Land Correctly
Once you’ve got a blog name and your site sorted you need to start thinking about your landing page. This is the page that all visitors will arrive at. The page needs to be informative but easy to read; gently guiding the visitor to take the action you want them to.

Add Content
Your website will need to have WordPress software or something similar. But, it must be self-hosted otherwise you won’t be able to do any of the following:
-Control your own data
-Sell advertising
-Add plugins and themes
-Use Google Analytics
-Have a site name “travelblog.com” as opposed to “travelblog.WordPress.com”.

You should take the time to learn how to use WordPress properly; don’t forget to choose a professional looking theme. This will allow you to quickly post blogs several times a week. These will of course relate to your travel experiences. You may think that you need to be travelling to exciting places every day in order to keep the content fresh. However, you don’t need to! It s also possible to add new content by creating bucket lists, how to travel with children, packing lists and other useful tips. Your actually travel experiences will simply be a bonus!

Make It About You
Every website should have an about you page. In fact it is one of the most important pages on your site. This is where visitors will find out about who you are and why they should follow you. The more personal and fun it is the better.

Don’t Forget Social Media
It’s important to create accounts on all the most popular social media sites and add content on them regularly. To help your customers keep the username the same on all the different sites. It’s important to remember that social media is for promoting your website; not for building your content. Use this to connect to new followers.

Build A Network
It is also important to connect with other ravel bloggers. Instead of seeing them as competition you can use them to inspire you and you can share customers by linking between other blogs; when appropriate.

Once you start gaining followers then you can start building affiliate links, selling your own products and displaying ads.
