Come and Celebrate Vatos Urban Tacos - BGC’s First Anniversary with 100-peso Tacos and Margaritas!

Serving up a culinary remix is nothing new to us, fusion restaurants have been popping up in every corner. We’ve seen it all, but have you heard of Kor-Mex? It’s the next big thing and it’s now popular in Singapore and South Korea thanks to Vatos Urban Tacos. Vatos, my friends, is a story of two cultures via food. Korean and Mexican food occupy a space on my top ten loved cuisines and seeing them being served in one is quite a delight and a surprise.

Vatos created a furtherance of fusion cuisine in the Philippines and is now on its first anniversary this February. Vatos is Mexican slang meaning “men” or “dudes”. Vatos Urban Tacos sprang from the minds (and bellies) of three Korean-Americans who wanted to offer a new type of dining experience in Korea. Kenny and Sid hail from Southern California, and Juweon planted his roots in Texas; hence, all three spent the majority of their lives growing up on authentic Mexican food.

Simultaneously, all three were fed a steady diet of home-made Korean food lovingly prepared by their first-generation mothers. Inevitably, such an environment led to the natural progression towards Korean-Mexican fusion cuisine, and to the creation of dishes like the Kimchi Carnitas Fries, Galbi Tacos, and Spicy Chicken Quesadillas were born.

Vatos Urban Tacos has since garnered praise for providing exciting new tastes using only the freshest ingredients. CNN named Vatos the “Hottest New Restaurant in Seoul.” 10 Magazine chose the Kimchi Carnitas Fries as the “Best Dish in Korea.” Vatos currently operates four locations in Seoul and two in Singapore.

In line with their upcoming first anniversary here in the Philippines, I was invited together with other foodie friends to try what they have to offer and below are the best-selling and new items from their menu:

Honey Tequila Wings - original recipe with a Mexican Flair. Wings coated in our sweet & spicy honey tequila sauce, served with deep-fried masa-battered jalapeños and blue cheese dipping sauce.

Kimchi Carnitas Fries - the one and only Vatos original! Seasoned French Fries with braised pork carnitas, sauteed kimchi, melted cheese and topped with sour cream, Vatos hot sauce, cilantro and onion.

The Fat Bastard Burrito Bowl - grilled fajita vegetables, carne asada steak, pulled pork carnita, roasted corn salsa, guacamole, fresh puco de gallo, sour cream and chipotle salsa.

Vatos Cowboy Queso - molten queso dip made from a blend of pepper jack and cheddar cheese, black beans, pico de gallo, cilantro lime crema, fresh hand cut tortilla chips served smoldering hot.

Korean Pork Belly Tacos - pork belly marinated with Korean soy paste, ssamjang aioli, sliced onion and pickled onion.

Baja Fish Tacos - the one and only Vatos original! Seasoned French Fries with braised pork carnitas, sauteed kimchi, melted cheese and topped with sour cream, Vatos hot sauce, cilantro and onion.

Chimichurri Chicken Tacos - Vatos Spicy Chicken topped with a sweet and tangy chimichurri salsa, lettuce, sour cream & Mexican cheese.

Chicken Fajitas - sizzling plate of marinated grilled chicken thigh served on top of a mound of fajita veggies served with mexican ricem chimichurri, pico de gallo, cilantro lime crema, Vatos hot sauce and warm flour tortillas.

Nutella Nachos - crispy tortilla triangles dusted with cinnamon sugar and hazelnut Nutella sauce, topped off with a heaping scoop of vanilla ice cream and powdered sugar.

Bacon Jalapeno Brownie - chewy chocolate jalapeno and candied walnuts brownie topped with vanilla ice cream, Nutella sauce, dulce de leche, chocolate chips and crispy bacon bits

Vatos Ritas - flavors include: Grow a Pear and Sexy Sanchez. Grow A Pear is passion fruit margarita with Magners pear cider while the Sexy Sanchez is strawberry margarita + Albens Apple & Strawberry Cider.

Makgeolitas - Classic and Passion Fruit flavors. Tequila meets makgeoli or Korean rice alcohol in this sweet and tangy cocktail (warning, it's deceivingly strong!)

I personally love the following: The Fat Bastard Burrito Bowl and Vatos Cowboy Queso (which I combined); the Korean Pork Belly Tacos were super good; the Nutella Nachos is something new to me and was a fun treat. The Bacon Jalapeno Brownie is a unique dessert that is a must try. I liked that the spicy flavor of the jalapeno is subtle and went well with the chocolate. As for the cocktails, man, they were strong so go easy on those, hahahaha!

On February 1 and 2, 2019 Vatos will be celebrating their first year in the Philippines! In line with this, they’ll holding several events to celebrate this milestone. Join them on their Two-day event celebration! Go crazy with their select Margaritas for PHP 100 per glass and 2-piece Tacos for only PHP 100 too! Kicking off their anniversary with some Acoustics and an Open Mic by Dindo and Ryan on February 1, 7PM onwards! Party continues on February 2, 8PM with the Best of 80’s & 90’s DJ Night Feat. DJ Erwin Paz.
